Help Support Earthquake Disaster Relief in Haiti

Posted Jan 13, 2010 by

Yesterday, a devastating 7.0 earthquake struck just outside the capital city of Port au Prince, Haiti.  The quake leveled buildings in the capital city and has caused significant damage throughout the country.  Nonprofits on the ground in Haiti, such as Oxfam and World Vision, have already mobilized to provide relief, support and essential services to those affected by the earthquake.  Their emergency teams are responding with public health, water and sanitation services as well as food, clean water, blankets, and tents to children and families impacted by the earthquake and aftershocks in Haiti.  Since Oxfam launched their cause, “Help Earthquake Survivors in Haiti” late last night, nearly 500 people have come together to donate $4,476!

    There has to be a way that the Red Cross can partner up with stores, websites, etc and accept donations of gift cards that people have in their possession right now. I have some that were given to me and I have been struggling to buy what I “need or want”. Right now what I NEED AND WANT is to help the people of Haiti. I have already made a monetary donation, but would love to be able to give them more. In these hard economic times, instead of letting those cards expire in your wallet, there must be a way to donate it to the Red Cross and have them take the monetary value. I have sent in a suggestion to the Red Cross and I am waiting on a response.

    Talvez um texto em português fissesse que a iniciativa estivesse ao alcançe de mais pessoas. Por esxemplo, eu não faço a menor ideia do que está escrito nesta iniciativa, mas até gostava de dar o meu contributo, no entanto, teria de perceber como.

    I noticed that Causes sent out an email about many nonprofits that have started fundraising projects, with funds specifically for Haiti relief, such as:

    * Doctors Without Borders
    * Friends of the World Food Program
    * International Rescue Committee

    I am NOT a representative of the Restavek Foundation but I know they are also putting together a fundraising project. Their focus is on saving young children from child slavery in Haiti known as the Restavek System. Their concern is that the earthquake will leave many of these children with no where to go, homeless and without a family.
