The Causes Blog

We are saddened by the continued reports flowing from Haiti of the destruction and death caused by the earthquake on Tuesday.  Our consolation is the outpouring of support and donations coming from the Causes community.  In just two days, nonprofits have raised $100,000 for disaster relief efforts in Haiti through the Causes application.  Thousands of donations have been made to nonprofits who are working on the ground to provide food, shelter, medical care, water, and other necessities to the people of Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas.

Many nonprofits are using Custom Fundraising Campaigns to raise money specifically for Haiti.  The International Rescue Committee (www.causes.com/irc), Friends of the World Food Program (www.causes.com/feedhaiti), and Doctors Without Borders (www.causes.com/msf) are a few of the bigger nonprofits who have created custom campaigns for Haiti relief.  Smaller nonprofits such as Partners in Health (www.causes.com/pih_bednets) and Healing Haiti (http://www.causes.com/healinghaiti) are also seeing an outpouring of donations through their cause communities.  Right now, you can buy a water jug on Facebook and the money will buy one jug of clean water on the ground in Haiti through Oxfam America.   Soon, you will also be able to buy other Charity Gifts for your friends’ Facebook profiles too, with the money going to relief efforts in Haiti. Thank you for donating at this important time to those who need it most.

Does anyone know how to change the address of a Red Cross Disaster Fund on a cause I established yesterday?

  14. Judi Sohn says:

First I have to say how much I love Causes. Both as an employee of a nonprofit organization and as a user who has donated to a number of charities on Facebook over the years.

I also appreciate how devastating the earthquake in Haiti was, and how much money is needed to help the people of that country deal with the immediate crisis and rebuild. I have already made a comfortable personal donation to relief efforts.

That said, I have to ask that you consider removing the banner at the top of all Causes pages asking for donations. There are a lot of very worthy causes addressing issues outside of Haiti, many of which where people’s lives are also at stake. Please consider letting them collect donations from those who are on a Birthday wish for example, without taking a chance that visitors will be redirected by the banner. If someone is on a regular Cause page, fine. But perhaps consider removing it from personal donation pages of other causes? Just a thought.

Remember that long after the initial shock of this devastation fades Haiti will still be struggling to survive. Consider giving in a way that will stretch your dollars farther into the future. The Haiti Fund at the Boston Foundation is receiving a dollar for dollar match from the Ansara Family Fund. And while 25% of money raised will go to immediate disaster relief, 75% will go toward reconstruction and human rights issues.
