The cyclone that hit the Machinga district of Malawi this January caused severe damage, including ripping the roof of Chisese Primary School, a local elementary school. The 930 students who attend Chisese have been forced to hold classes “only on days when it’s not raining,” the District Education Manager said. “If rains come during a school day, kids rush home or huddle together and wait until it’s over.” The timing is particularly unfortunate as it’s rainy season in Malawi so strong thunderstorms can occur daily.
Camfed, the Campaign for Female Education in Africa, jumped into action and created a custom campaign on Causes to raise $4500 to replace the roof of Chisese Primary School. 147 of their cause members responded with donations as small as $10 or as large as $300 and together, they completed their goal. Soon, Camfed will post pictures of the finished roof and share stories from the students in Malawi who these cause members helped get back to school.
To create this custom project-based fundraising campaign on Causes, Camfed signed into their Nonprofit Partner Center at http://nonprofits.causes.com, clicked on “Create a Custom Campaign” in the Fundraising tab, and filled out the information about their project. They made sure to include a photo in their description that showed the school with no roof, which gave potential donors a clear sense of where their dollars would be going. They chose to feature the cause on multiple causes: Educate Girls in Africa. Fight Poverty and HIV., Campaign for Female Education in Africa, and S.E.E. – Students for Equal Education so their causes could work together to raise the money. Next, they posted bulletins to these causes telling members what had happened and asking them to donate. They sent an update bulletin when they were half-way to their goal as well. Their bulletins were short, limited to 1-2 sentences per paragraph, and easily scannable. Most importantly, there was only one link in the bulletin (to the cause) and one call to action (donate). By keeping communications clear and concise, Camfed was better able to mobilize their cause members to donate.
“We make it a point to thank every donor on their Activist Profile,” says Ryan Quiel of Camfed. “It helps close the loop, tells them about the impact of their donation, and their friends can see it and donate too.” Ryan also used Camfed’s Facebook Fan Page and Twitter feed to ask people to donate to the campaign.
Their efforts paid off, and soon the 930 students of Chisese Primary School will be able to go to school regularly again. Great work!

Wonderfull! That’s what we should do anywhere to achieve universal primary schoolship mainly in poor countries. Brick by brick we can build classrooms and schools. One by one we can school them all! Yes we can! So let’s do it!
Sounded good up until I reserched the group and found out it is a Feminist organization!

147 of their cause members responded with donations as small as $10 or as large as $300 and together?really?
we all in a days time waste our humility, wanting and dedicating our time to help others when we cant even appreciate the freedom we have to just be humble enough to love each other with out coveting ones desires and possessions. Let alone contribute to a charity such as great as hunger
Camfed is not a feminist organisation. It works for the education of girls and women because this is proven to be the best strategy for eradicating poverty in Africa. Women re-invest 90% of what they earn back into their families – so the whole community benefits from improved opportunities for women.
If I typed your name and the word ‘feminist’ into google it would come up with results too – doesn’t mean you are a feminist!
