Causes launches Facebook Fanpage integration

Posted Apr 28, 2011 by

We’re really excited to announce the launch of our Facebook fanpage integration!

Adding the Causes tab to your fanpage is super easy – follow the steps below and you’ll be ready to go in no time.

  1. Make sure you’re logged in to the Facebook account that has administrator rights to the fanpage
  2. Navigate to http://facebook.com/causes
  3. On the lower left you’ll see an option to “Add to My Page”
  4. Head back to the fanpage you’re adding the Causes tab to and click the Causes tab
  5. Click on the “Get Started” button
  6. We’ll take you to a search form – enter the name of the nonprofit you’d like to support.
  7. Once you locate your nonprofit of choice, click the radio button next to the organization’s name and then click “Continue.”
  8. On this step, you may have more than one choice: If your selected nonprofit organization has a custom fundraising project, you’ll be able to choose either a project or select general fundraising.
  9. Once you’ve made your choice, click “Continue” and we’ll redirect you to your new Causes fanpage tab!

But, wait! There’s more!

While we are fans of the name “Causes” you may want to customize your new tab’s name. It’s ok, we’re cool with that. Here’s how:

  1. When viewing your fanpage wall, head over to the upper right and click on the “Edit Page” button:
  2. Once you’re in the edit page view of your fanpage, click the “Apps” link:
  3. Scroll down until you see the Causes app and click “Edit Settings”:
  4. Enter your chosen tab name, click “Save” and then “Okay”:
  5. You’re done!

A couple more hints before I go

  • If you want to link directly to your Causes tab on your fanpage in an email, tweet or other, just click on the tab and then highlight the URL in your browser.
  • If you want your Causes tab to be the default page your fans land on when they visit your page, head back over to the “Edit Page” settings I showed you earlier. On the main “Manage Permissions” page, you’ll see the opportunity to select your “Default Landing Tab”. Choose “Causes” (or whatever you named your Causes tab) from the drop down, click “Save Changes” and you’re done.

If you have any questions or feedback, head over to our Community Forum and let us know.

Not all causes are non profits. I was guessing when I saw this post that when you said to go to your fan page and search for non profits, that you really meant causes. I guess I couldn’t imagine why you would have integration between the two only for non profits so I would hope you consider this a bug and are working to fix it.

It also would be helpful to have an illustration/description of what exactly this integration provides (even though we can make a good guess). In addition, it might be nice to have more of the bugs worked out in the existing framework (I’ve posted about them in the forums) before allocating resources to new features.

The other time not to launch new features is when your servers are overloaded. I keep running into large delays getting to my cause as do others. This began even before you rolled out this feature.

It is such a pity Facebook feels it only necessary to allow these options for US (501(c) 3′s – Just because we are not a US foundation, shouldn’t mean we can’t use the feature because you can’t find our causes page in the search UNLESS we are a 501(c)3… There is lot of good work going on worldwide…

OK, so I successfully followed all the steps, set up a Causes link on our FB page, and then tested the buttons — the “give” and “share” buttons both landed me on a 404 page. This is definitely NOT good! What’s the problem? What’s the fix?

  • Zulay

I was successful in adding these steps, however it would great if there was a link a fan could click on, that will allow them to create their own cause, with my non-profit as the beneficiary right on this new Causes page app. Thank you for the tip!

When I enter my non-profit name, which is registered with Guidestar AND already has a causes page setup in causes it keeps telling me that it can’t find anything and to try again. Help!

  • KM

The “Continue” button remains greyed out even after I select my organization from the list. This happens for multiple pages, in IE, Firefox, and Chrome, in Windows XP and WIndows 7.

Our organization would love to use this feature but we’re not based in the U.S. :( Do you have anything out there for the international nonprofits?

  • http://www.tourette.ca Ken Butland

It really needs to be posted that this is exclusively for American nonprofits. You’re causing registered nonprofits outside the US to waste their time. :-(

      Hi Robin ,

I have a cause that is helping Native American Indians who have been wronged by the United states government. we are currently working on a case that includes gender discrimination against the women of the S’Klallam Tribe, in Washington state. Our goals are big and we need help to get our cause to federal court as we have had our Indian Civil Rights broken by tribal council and tribal court and they will not give the descendants their due process, far to much to list here.
